Social networking 'becoming more specialised'

The popularity of social networking has forced sites to become more sophisticated, according to one expert.

As more people make use of their mobile phones and mobile broadband connections to log on and chat to others, a spokesman for Where Are You Now said the sector is becoming more tailored to consumers needs.

Ian Rumgay, European communications manager for the social networking site, said that one particular area where this is happening is in travel and tourism.

"You can get in contact with people that you have travelled with before or who might have similar interests to you," he said. "You can also meet up with people all before you even get on the flight."

This month sees the launch of a joint website, bluenity.com, which links up air travellers and is put together as part of a joint initiative by flight carriers Air France and KLM.

Some mobile phone networks offer special deals on access to social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace.
