With more features being integrated into mobile phones such as the Apple iPhone 3G, one expert has suggested such portable technology is proving popular.
A spokeswoman for Quietvox, a company which specialises in wireless audio solutions, said that portable devices are likely to replace more traditional umbrella guided tours.
Sabrina Gallone, who represents the company in the North, Central and Latin American territories, said that consumers like to have more control over their tourist experience - and personal handsets provide this.
"You can raise the volume [and] lower the volume - some people might have a problem with hearing and need to raise the volume," she said.
Quietvox provides its own wireless audio assistance systems for use with live presentations and guided tours.
However, the Apple iPhone 3G has downloadable applications available such as the London Travel Guide for iPhone, launched earlier this year by Coolgorilla.
