Global mobile gaming 'could reach £6.6bn'

The use of mobile phones for gaming will continue to grow, according to the results of a new study.

A survey conducted by Juniper Research has found that the global retail value of the mobile gaming market could rise from $5.4 billion (£3.6 billion) this year to over $10 billion before 2013.

It was noted that the introduction of the Apple iPhone 3G had also boosted the sector by providing a new platform from which publishers and developers can work.

However, it was stated that despite this, there are fears that limited shares for other publishers is causing some to move away from the market.

Report author Dr Windsor Holden said that Apple's model for mobile gaming profit had been a success and said that other operators should respond with similar business strategies.

If this failed to happen, he added: "publishers faced with low margins may simply exit Java completely - thereby reducing consumer choice in the longer term".

Apple iPhone 3G users can download the latest applications, software and games from the company's online App Store - which launched earlier this year.
