The history of Lobster

No, this isn’t some elaborate joke, there really is a brand of mobile phones called Lobster!

But who are Lobster, you may ask… Well, since 2005, Virgin Mobile have been releasing their own mobile phones, and they’ve been doing it under the name ‘Lobster’. Granted, at first, that may seem strange (actually, it may seem mental!) but just think to yourself for a second… will YOU forget a mobile phone named after a crustacean in a hurry? Especially when it’s logo is a teeny little lobster?

Far from being mental, that’s possibly some of the most inspired marketing we’ve ever seen on mobile phones. It IS still mental, but it’s in a good way!

Starting with the Lobster 485, the brand has continued to the present day, and looks certain to be used on many more mobile phones before it gets consigned to the history archives.

On top of that, it has connections with the world of art, too. Whether this was a happy accident, or whether Virgin Mobile planned it all along, these ‘dare-to-be-different’ mobile phones share a gene or two with the Lobster Phone, created by surrealist Salvador Dali. Admittedly, though, these Virgin Mobile phones don’t have an actual lobster glued onto them…

It’d be kind of brilliant, if they did, though!
