About Blackberry

You want the perfect smartphone for sending emails? We compare mobile phone deals from all the major retailers, letting you find the perfect deal. With impartial service, and bags and bags of information, we’ll make sure you always have everything you need to know, including all the info about Blackberry by RIM.

You’ve probably heard of Blackberry device. They started out just for businessmen (mind you, so did a LOT of mobile phones!), but in recent times, they’ve become some of the hottest phones for young people on the go. One of the big factors in that is how cool they are. Just take a look at the Blackberry 8110 GPS. Not only do you get exceptionally useful stuff like satnav built in, but you get fun stuff like the 2 megapixel camera, and of course, being a Blackberry, you get stonkingly easy email use, as well!

The big market that’s going for the Blackberry nowadays is young, cool women. If you fancy a device that’s more overtly feminine, then check out the Blackberry 8110 GPS Pink. Not only does it share every single feature with its darker-coloured sibling, but it comes in that vibrant pink colour, helping you stand out from the crowd. With full email support on both, both also use the innovative SureType system, combining a normal mobile phone keypad with a QWERTY keypad, to make typing emails and messages on the Blackberry even easier!

Meanwhile, back in the more business-oriented camp (although it too is becoming the darling of normal people), comes the Blackberry Curve 8310. This really is the ultimate communication device RIM offer, with a full QWERTY keyboard and a much wider, landscape screen making it one of the most perfect mobile phones to use for internet and messaging!

The history of Blackberry

Everyone’s familiar with the big names in the industry. Everyone knows Nokia, for example. But there are lots of people making some really cool, really powerful phones. Take, for example, RIM, a name you may not know, but it’s a safe bet you’ve heard of their devices; the famous Blackberry range, featuring mobile phones with the most comprehensive email service you can imagine.

First things first, what does RIM actually stand for? (You’d be surprised how many people ask that.) Well, the name actually means Research In Motion, and that’s the company who actually make and market the Blackberry range of devices. But what of the devices themselves?

Well, the first Blackberry appeared in the wild in 1997, and it was clear from the start that they were setting out to make the world of emails their playpen. But they’d need a killer application to neatly stuff the opposition, which is precisely what they had in push emails, or in other words, emails that came through to the device automatically when they were received, without you having to log in, and download the emails from your server. It was quicker, easier, and it made emails as easy to use on the go as text messages!

That ease of use, and that ability to get your emails wherever, without ANY fuss whatsoever made Blackberry mobile phones super-addictive, so much so, that the well-known and oft-stated nickname of them is “Crackberry” (yep, that’s named after a form of cocaine. Told you they’re addictive!) As for their REAL name, that was picked by Lexicon Branding (the same company who named the Pentium processor and the Apple PowerBook), who said the keys looked like the tiny seeds on a strawberry. However, the name strawberry sounded a bit rubbish, so they changed it to Blackberry, RIM liked it, and the rest is history!

Oh, and they’re famous, too, with one TV show in particular making them its own. Yep, the place you’ll most commonly see the Blackberry onscreen, and the show that probably accounts for most of their cool factor today, is ‘Sex And The City’…
